Do you tip in VIETNAM?

If you are travelling to Vietnam then you may be wondering whether you will need to tip for services such as restaurants and hotels while you are visiting.

Walk down any alley in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and your nose will instantly be filled with a multitude of aromatic fragrances and the smell of Vietnamese dishes cooking away. Vietnam is known for its punchy local cuisine, including famous dishes such as Pho and Banh Xeo.

In general, tipping is not something that is expected too much by the Vietnamese locals, however, due to their low wages, tips are still graciously received by those working in tourism and hospitality. The extra money earned through small tips can go a long way in helping the hardworking Vietnamese locals provide for their families.

So, do you need to tip in Vietnam? While tipping is not necessarily a custom in Vietnam and Vietnamese locals will not be offended if you do not leave a tip, it is still a nice way of saying thank you for the exceptional service that you will find in Vietnamese destinations such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang.
